    Maintaining good posture, and proper body alignment, balance, and positioning while you are standing, sitting or laying down is vital to sustain a physically fit and healthy body.

    Body alignment issues usually develops from using improper posture when sitting, lifting heavy objects, walking, or laying down can lead to misalignments of joints which can cause injury, pain, and discomfort.

    Diagnosing your body alignment starts with looking in the mirror, or have someone look at you to tell you if your body is out of alignment. First look at the head, and then the shoulders, hips, knees, and feet. The head should be evenly centered between the shoulders. If you head leans to the right or to the left, and the upper part of your head doesn't follow a straight line down the center of the chest, it could be that the muscles in the upper body and tight or week. It could also mean that a vertebrae in the spine is out of alignment. Next, we look at the shoulders to see if the height is even on each side, or if they roll forward. It is important to open the chest and strengthened the upper back muscles to open up and balance that area. Look at the hips to see if one hip is rotating foreword. This usually means we have week glutes or that a vertebrae is out of alignment. Now look at the knees and the ankles to make sure that they are even with each other. Both feet should be in the same position, pointed straight, or slightly out, depending on the activity.

    Ask the person assisting you to tell you if your feet are straight and your body weight is well distributed, as you walk away from your assistant and walk back towards your assistant. Make the necessary adjustments, if any, then walk away and back again. Keep making adjustments and eventually they will become a habit. Awareness of posture, alignment, balance, and position will help you make the necessary adjustments.

    Good posture can help reduce stress on the back muscles and decrease pain. Practice good posture when lifting or carrying objects, and when sitting, standing or sleeping. Also remember to use correct posture throughout the day, during work, school, or other activities. Try to avoid sitting for long period of time. Get up and move around.
