Why is Self-care Important

Why is Self-care Important?
Self-care basically refers to a fundamental level of healthcare activities made by individuals, families, communities, and government. to restore and enhance health, prevent disease, limit illness, etc. All human beings require some type of personal healthcare that they perform for themselves. Although there are many factors involved, each individual is responsible for their own self-care maintenance.

Self-care is a key component of good physical, emotional and spiritual health. What you do for yourself, can make a huge and positive difference in your life. On the flip side however, neglecting or hurting yourself can make a huge negative difference in your life. How well you take care of yourself, will help dictate the type of life you live.

Some people believe that it’s more important to take care of others before you take care of yourself, and that your own worth is measured by your ability to help others, and to place the needs of others before yourselves. That all sounds well and good, but it’s not the wiser way to go about it. It’s a well known fact that people who are able to meet their own physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are better equipped to care of themselves, and are in a much better position to take care of the other people and things around them. Your ability to take care of yourself is probably one of the best things that you can do for the people in your life. Not only will you be happier and healthier, but those around you will also benefit by you self-care success.

Self-care isn’t just about taking care of yourself; it’s also about the ability to take of the people you love. This is especially important for parents and caregivers. Taking care of others is an admirable and worthy quest. However, anyone who attempts to meet the needs of family members, friends, and work, before meeting their own self-care needs, is creating a recipe for failure. Regardless if you’re trying to please and care for others, or if your job requires all of your time and energy, neglecting your self-care will eventually create problems. Over time, self-neglect will take its toll. The mind and body must express itself, letting you know it has a problem. Once a physical, mental, or emotional problem arises, getting rid of it will probably be more difficult than if you had maintained a well-balanced self-care routine.

The lack of sleep, bad eating habits, stress, anxiety, and worry, not to mention fatigue, will all start to have a significant negative effect on your health and well-being. You cannot give what you don’t have. You may reach a point where you can no longer provide or take care of those around you, or the things around you. And, over time, any long term residual leftover effects may prohibit you from living the quality of life that you so desire and deserve.

Attending to physical and emotional self-care needs may help you prevent, or reduce the negative effects caused by the many challenges and adversities of life. You are not being selfish by taking care of you. It’s actually quite the opposite. The healthier and better off you are, the more you are able to provide and take care of the people you love, and the things you care about. It’s simple logic. Self-care is lifelong process that is done on a daily basis. It’s the best thing that you can do to position yourself to successfully cope and manage everyday stressors and problems that arise.

Maybe you already know all of this but your situation prohibits you from taking action. The problem could be that you’re inundated and overwhelmed with things that are stopping you from attending to your self-care needs. We already established the pros of proper self-care and the cons of self-neglect. It’s up to you to do whatever you have to do to create more balance in your lifestyle, so that you can allocate some time for your self-care needs. Consider your short term as well as your long term health needs and your overall goals. This may help you to create an incentive, and the motivation to make positive changes in your lifestyle. It’s not about being greedy or selfish. It’s that you will not be able to sustain self-neglect and self-sabotage for a long period of time. Make small adjustments now, and make a few more adjustments each week or month, and little by little, you will help “you” to be the person that you have the potential to be, and live the life you are suppose to live. It’s up to you to do things to help yourself.
You are way too important, and your self-care needs are way too important for you, to neglect yourself. Don’t let you or anyone else tell you otherwise!

Blessings of love and peace in your life
