Astigmatism is a refractive eye disorder like myopia and hyperopia. It happens due to the uneven oval shape of the retina, like the back of a spoon. The light can't enter the retina with this kind of shape. Thus your vision gets blurred and out of focus. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 1 in 3 people have some type of Astigmatism. However, many people are ignorant of this condition and its treatment methods.

In upcoming sections, we will provide information about symptoms, causes, types, and treatment of Astigmatism:-

Following are some common symptoms of Astigmatism. If you feel any of these symptoms, contact an eye doctor immediately.

  • Blurred vision
  • Changed vision
  • Difficulty in reading
  • Eyestrain
  • Difficulty in viewing at night
  • Headaches, especially after reading and viewing screen for a longer time
  • Squinting
  • Near-sightedness and farsightedness can also be a sign of Astigmatism

Check out the following common causes of Astigmatism:-
Astigmatism's most common cause is the gradual change of shape of the eye lens's inner curve. The surface of the cornea also gets altered. Usually, it is an inherited disease or appears in childhood. But sometimes it happens in adult age also, due to illnesses, injury or eye surgery. Cataract and Keratoconus can also be a reason for Astigmatism.

We are listing here the types of Astigmatism along with their characteristics:-

Myopic Astigmatism
If both the central meridians of the eye become near-sighted, it's myopic Astigmatism. The severity of this kind of condition may vary from person to person.

Hyperopic Astigmatism
If both or one of your eye's central meridians is farsighted, it can be hyperopic Astigmatism.

Mixed Astigmatism
If one of the central meridians is near-sighted and the other is farsighted, it's mixed Astigmatism.

Regular Astigmatism
The positioning of the central meridians categorizes regular Astigmatism. If both of them are vertical to each other, it's regular Astigmatism.

Irregular Astigmatism
In this condition, the meridians are not vertical to each other. Irregular Astigmatism occurs as an aftereffect of eye surgery, an injury, or an illness.

Corneal Astigmatism
It is the most common form of Astigmatism. During corneal Astigmatism, the anterior surface of the eye appears oval.
Multiple types of Astigmatism may attack you together. Therefore, you can suffer from one or a mix of Astigmatism types.
Astigmatism is a treatable condition. Following are its conventional treatment options:-

Eyeglasses are the simplest and easiest way to treat Astigmatism. It corrects the Astigmatism vision by correcting its degree and the cornea error.

Toric lenses
If you are not comfortable wearing glasses all the time, you can opt for toric lenses. They are contact lenses designed to help people with Astigmatism vision. But it doesn't work in all types of Astigmatism. Your eye doctor can tell you if these contact lenses can help your vision or not.

LASIK Eye Surgery
During this surgery, the laser is used to provide the correct shape to the cornea. When the cornea's irregular curves get corrected, the light refracts in proper focus into the retina. LASIK eye surgery is suggested in most chronic cases only. But it cures the Astigmatism vision completely. You would not need glasses or lenses after this procedure. A follow-up procedure may be required in some cases.

PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy) is also an eye surgery. During this procedure, doctors will remove the tissue from the upper and inner layers of the cornea.

Astigmatism is a curable and manageable eye disorder. But you should not take it lightly and delay your visit to your eye doctor. They can diagnose the condition of your disease and prescribe a suitable treatment.
